The territory in question is part of Guyana, meaning the situation could cause a war between the two countries. Therefore, Itamaraty diplomats are already observing the situation and looking for ways to maintain peace.
The objective of Brazilian diplomacy would be to seek a peaceful solution between the two countries without escalating into an armed conflict. According to the Metrópoles portal, the matter is handled in a “reserved” manner at Itamaraty, with the aim of avoiding public debate. The objective is to seek the consolidation of a “Zone of Peace and Cooperation” between those involved.
In addition to Brazil, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) also monitors the possibility of an invasion of Venezuela. With the scale of tensions, experts do not rule out the chances of a war involving the two countries. Guyana received strong support from the United States.
The Essequibo region is targeted by Venezuelans due to its potential for oil exploration. Last year, Guyana established a military cooperation agreement with the Americans in exchange for exploration of some points in the territory.
