Rupununi Man Wins Fishing Competition

Congratulation to Mr. Von Harding on winning the Fisheries Department’s Catch of the Day competition.

Mr. Harding of Aranaputa Valley, North Rupununi, submitted a photograph of his catch: the Gilded Catfish or Jau (Zungaro Zungaro) commonly called the Black Catfish or Black Manguruyu.

This fish is considered a major predator and scavenger, typically found in river channels feeding on small fish and invertebrates. It is most active during the night. They are known to reach lengths of 1.5m with weights exceeding 50kg.
