Mangroves on the Shore: An Environmental Dilemma

Published: 29th of January, 2026 by Patrick Carpen.

Decades ago, I used to jog on the seawall along the Kitty Public Road in Georgetown, Region 4, Guyana, while enjoying the beautiful view of the Atlantic and the refreshing sea breeze. Back then, these mangroves were small or they didn’t exist. Now they block out the view completely.

Mangroves protect us from the sea, and this is especially important for Georgetown which is below sea level. But at the same time, they’re barring us from the Atlantic in a less than desirable way.

The solution here is not to cut the mangroves down, but to build the seawall higher so we can still have the view while being protected by the mangroves. An added layer of security restores the aesthetic.
