Video: Catching Hassar in Guyana

The hassar fish is a delicacy in Guyana, South America. It is a sweet water fish which is known for its sweet flesh. Hassar is often curried together with potatoes and moringa pods, producing a delicious meal when served with boiled rice.

Hassar breeds most prolifically in trenches and swamps which are overgrown with weeds, but they may also be found in other places. Some Guyanese practice hassar farming by reproducing the preferred habitat under controlled circumstances and in a guarded location.

Hassar is usually caught by flinging a cast net into the water and hauling it out slowly. In this video, two Guyanese men enjoy a good catch of hassar in a natural setting.
