As oil companies turn their attention to potentially vast reserves of petroleum in Region 9, residents of the Rupununi are on high alert with most opposing oil extraction in the Region. Groups such as Visit Rupununi, Conservation International, the South Rupununi Conversation Society, and other similar bodies are calling for restraint and preservation of the natural environment. A small fraction of the population, however, is open to negotiations hoping that industrial activities can generate revenues which develop the Region while taking conscientious steps to minimize environmental costs. How Guyana’s Victoria Amazonica Lost its Title as the World’s Largest Water Lily (Flora and Fauna)

For centuries, Guyana’s national flower, the Victoria Amazonica, also called the Victoria Regia Lily, added worldwide prominence to Guyana with its attribute “the world’s largest water lily.” That was true up the year 2022 when a new discovery in another South American country blew it out of the water. I’ve been following the Facebook Posts of the South Rupununi Conservation Society for several years now, and I was amazed by the dedication of this group to environmental protection and traditional knowledge proliferation. At the forefront of it all is Rupununi resident Alyssa Melville who is credited with being the mastermind behind their Environmental Education model which the group started developing since 2018. The collective efforts of the members of the South Rupununi Conversation Society resulted in them being awarded the St. Andrews Prize 2026, an annual international award which includes a US$96,000 payment.
