A Heartrending Tragedy: Guyana Mourns the Death of the MV Barima Victims
For our top story this week, we take a moment to honor the victims of the MV Barima tragedy. This was a disaster of catastrophic proportions that never should have happened. It was an accident that was completely avoidable. The boat was old, overloaded, and outdated, and traveling through one of the roughest patches of the Atlantic Ocean. This tragedy cannot be blamed on any single person, entity, or government: it is a failure of the entire nation as a whole. At the same time, it cannot be ignored that there was gross incompetence on the part of Guyana’s Transport and Harbours Department, among others. But in every dark cloud, there is a silver lining, and from the ashes of this heartbreaking tragedy rise stories of strength, resilience, and heroism. We trust that this painful episode will serve as a catalyst for a brighter chapter in Guyanese history: genuine care, more foresight, and greater urgency in fixing problems that are looming over our heads like the sword of Damocles. Trending News: CCJ Ruling: the Future of Guyana’s Political Landscape Hangs in the Balance
The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), which is Guyana’s final court of appeal, has announced that it will deliver its judgement on the case of Azzrudin and Nazar Mohamed versus the State of Guyana in the ongoing US extradition process on the 29th of July 2026. The Mohameds, after losing at Guyana’s appellate court, moved to the CCJ to challenge the “Authority to Proceed” (ATP) issued by the Minister of Home Affairs Hon. Oneidge Walrond. The lawyers of the Mohameds are contending that the ATP is tainted with political bias since the younger Mohamed is a political opponent of the government in power. Read story…

Born the Garden City of Georgetown in the 1960s, novelist and scriptwriter Geeta Outar Sirjoo migrated in her late teens to the twin Island country of Trinidad and Tobago.
