Termite City is located in Moco Moco Village, Central Rupununi, about 7 miles from the town of Lethem. There you can admire giant anthills against the beautiful backdrop of savannahs, sky, and mountains.
All across the Rupununi Savannahs of Guyana, you can find giant anthills as high as ten to fifteen feet built by a multitude of tiny ants. These giant anthills, some of which boast a base of about 5 feet in diameter, are an example of nature’s wonders because they were built by ants smaller than the tips of your fingernails. These giant anthills built with clay by tiny ants are remarkably strong.
Inside the plain and simple anthill lies a bustling metropolis of tunnels and chambers, home to a thriving colony of termites. A giant anthill is a towering structure built by fierce and industrious ants. It’s a sight to behold!
Although these giant anthills can be found all across the Rupununi, and perhaps in other places throughout Guyana as well, there is a spot in Moco Moco Village, Central Rupununi, where there are about one hundred of these giant anthills clustered closely together. Due to the intensity of the agglomeration as well as the exceptional size of the giant anthills clustered here, this location is known as “Termite City.” While there may be other “clusters of giant anthills” around the Rupununi, and across Guyana, this particular location in Moco Moco village is called “Termite City” by the locals.

In the peace and calm of the lonely savannahs, nature works its magic: the tiny ants construct homes taller than the average man. The giant anteaters pass by from time to time to eat the ants by breaking into the anthill, but they deliberately leave most of the ants alive so they can rebuild and multiply to keep a steady supply of anteater food.
Termite city is an illustration of the wonders of nature at work. It is a magnificent sight to admire against the backdrop of the Kanuku Mountains and the splendid Rupununi sunset in the cool of the afternoon or early morning sunrise.
