The Marudi Gold Mining Mountains to the South of Guyana

The Marudi Gold Mining Mountain is a designated mining area to the southeast of Guyana. Mining for gold in the Marudi Mountains is not a task for people with a weak mind, body, heart, or soul. It requires strength, determination, and courage. Small miners use improvised tools, machinery, acquired skills, and hard manual labor to extract the precious metal from the earth.

Being a small miner in the Marudi Mountains is no walk in the park. You’ll have to be constantly alert to protect yourself from criminal elements, snakes, and other dangerous animals. Further, living in Marudi puts you at high risk for contracting the dreadful malaria disease.

There are many success stories coming out of the Marudi Mountains gold mining legacy. Some youths tell stories of going in and coming back out with a few millions in the span of a few months. Some have made it into a lifelong career.

But for others, all that glitters is not gold. Some who ventured into Marudi Mountains came back broke, sometimes sick with malaria, and tragically, a few people have lost their lives.

If you’re down on your luck but you’re feeling your strength, you have the option of venturing into Marudi Mountains. Who knows…you might come back out with enough gold to start over in life. Just remember to walk with some malaria prophylaxis and know the people you’re going with. And yes, pray.

Small Miners Versus Mining Companies

The Marudi Mountains District is a Mining Area to the south of Lethem in Region 9, Guyana, South America. The mineral rich area has been mined for decades by both local small miners and big multinational companies. Mining companies hire thousands of employees and use heavy machinery to extract gold. They carry away the bulk of the precious metal while paying the government a tax or tariff. They also provide employment to thousands of Guyanese.

After the APNU/AFC government took office in 2015, there were several prolonged disputes between Canadian Mining Company, Romanex, and small miners from the local communities over various mining lands in the Marudi Mountains District. Romanex is said to have purchased large areas of mining lands from the government and has been facing challenges in relocating small miners who contend that it is their right mine there. This publication understands that after the PPP/C government resumed office in 2020, they made provisions for small miners to have more mining land in Marudi.
