Some see it as progress while others see it as suppression of indigenous and local livelihood. A Chinese national has made formal application to the government for permission to establish a Supermarket in Santa Rosa.

Popular politician and former toshao Lenox Shuman has rejected the idea citing the need to preserve and protect indigenous identity and territory from excessive infiltration.

In recent years, Chinese nationals have expanded their investment portfolio to hundreds of supermarkets across Guyana. Although the supermarkets stock significant local products and hire a few local staff, some Guyanese see this as unfair advantage to the local population further contending that it siphons out too much money to China thus suppressing national development.

Others contend that the Chinese bring convenience and progress through their supermarket projects.
