While some persons might have breathed a sigh of relief when the Guyana Revenue Authority dropped all tax evasion charges against the Mohameds a few days ago, it seems the battle is far from won. In a live Facebook broadcast yesterday, 7th of November, 2025, Guyana’s Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Hon. Mohabir Anil Nandlall explained that the charges were dropped to facilitate a smooth extradition process. He further said that the Guyana Revenue Authority has not given up the alleged tax evasion money assessed at 191 billion Guyana dollars, but that they will try to obtain the value from the Mohameds through the legal apparatus.

In early November, 2025, the United States Government made a formal request for the extradition of the father/son duo who were sanctioned by OFAC in June 2024. The AG explained that the GRA discontinued the charges in order to facilitate extradition to the United States where Nazar and Azzrudin Mohamed are wanted by the US Government to face charges for alleged tax evasion, money laundering, and other financial crimes.

Azzrudin Mohamed, leader of the WIN political movement, is expected to be sworn in as the main opposition leader in Guyana’s parliament. He has indicated through his lawyers that he intends to fight the extradition request all the way to the Caribbean Court of Justice.
