Last updated: October 28, 2025 at 1:35 amWith the United States issuing a statement that Nazar and Azzrudin Mohamed have been indicted by US law enforcement, the possibility of extradition to face charges in the United States now looms over the heads of the father/son duo like the Sword of Domacles. In mid 2024, the United States’ Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) had announced sanctions against the business magnates and some of their enterprises locally and abroad, including Mohamed’s Enterprise and Hadi’s World. More than one year later, on 5th of October, 2025, US law enforcement tightened the screw by announcing that the Mohameds have been indicted by a grand jury in the US Southern Federal District. Charges include money laundering, wire fraud, tax evasion, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
In light of this development, the United States is likely to write to the Guyana Government requesting extradition of the pair to the United States for trial. If convicted, they could spend about ten years in a US prison. Recently the Mohameds have been portrayed an enemy of the ruling PPP/C government, an image cemented by the fact that Azzrudin Mohamed now leads the main opposition political party, sidelining the former APNU coalition. These circumstances suggest that the Guyana Government might be quick to cooperate with the United States in extraditing the Mohameds, putting up little or no resistance to the request.
But the Mohameds haven’t flinched. In a bold Facebook post made today, 6th of October, 2025, Azzrudin Mohamed asserted that the move was facilitated by the PPP/C government and is nothing short of political persecution. He alleges that the government is intimated by his formidable political opposition, and that they are doing everything they can to get him out of the way.
While some Guyanese, such as arch enemy Mikhail Rodrigues AKA the Guyanese Critic, and some members of the PPP/C fraternity, seem to be rejoicing over this development, thousands express sympathy and hope for the Mohameds, reassuring them in Facebook comments that “God is on their side,” and that “everything will be OK.” Thousands of Guyanese share the sentiment that the Mohameds are a ray of hope shining through a cloud of despair, a government of “poor people” sent by God to rescue the country and lift them out of poverty. But others are skeptical, expressing sentiments that the Mohameds are using politics to rap up public support in a desperate bit to evade accountability to the United States.
The younger Mohamed himself, in his Press Statement, quoted a Psalm of David, “When the wicked came to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell. Though they encamp against me, I shall not fear.”
Statement by Azzrudin Mohamed
To my fellow Guyanese,
I have noted the allegations peddled against me and my family. While there are legal constraints on how much I can share at this juncture, I am permitted to say this much in the interim; the leadership of the PPP has been advancing a sustained narrative against the Mohameds aimed at discrediting us. Make no mistake; this is not just a personal attack; this is political; this is a fear tactic. The PPP has seen what is possible after a mere three months of campaigning; they know what is at stake, and they are reacting accordingly.
My emergence into Parliament after campaigning for only three months sends a clear message of how quickly our movement has changed the political landscape in Guyana. It was declared that WIN has 16 seats, though that allocation does not reflect our numbers on the ground. We are grateful because this result is a remarkable achievement on entry. The PPP knows what is at stake in 2030, and they want no challengers in Parliament. The PPP holds a majority; why then are they stalling to convene the 13th parliament and swear in the duly elected opposition?
This administration misused public funds – 300,000 USD – to hire a U.S. lobby firm whose sole purpose is to smear and marginalise political opponents; in this instance, their sole purpose is to target the Mohameds and, in their attacks, paint a false narrative about us. Now you know the purpose of the nearly 63 million GYD wasted on a lobby firm – political persecution – and that money could have been used to uplift the people.
Fearing the momentum seen at the last election and the cry of the Guyanese people for change, they are doing everything possible to stop me. The constant attacks, whether directly or indirectly, are to weaken me, with hopes that if they hit hard enough, I will cower and retreat. Truth be told, if I rid myself of my political ambitions, these attacks will cease, but I, Azruddin Mohamed, leader of We Invest in Nationhood and Leader of the Opposition (Elect), reaffirm my commitment to you, the Guyanese people. I will continue to stand up and fight, no matter the cost.
Please know that for the love of country and on the principle of service over self, I stand resolute. I will not be silenced. When the wicked came to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell. Though they encamp against me, I shall not fear.
To my supporters, thank you for standing with me.
Yours in service and in solidarity,
Azruddin Mohamed. (6th of October, 2025)
