Climbing Schomburgk’s Peak on the Kanuku Mountain Range in Region 9

Climbing Schomburgk’s Peak is definitely one the greatest adventures in the Rupununi geared towards the physically fit and those who want to test their athletic abilities while immersing in the beauty of nature. At an elevation of 3500 feet, Schomburgk’s Peak is one of the highest points of the Kanuku Mountain Range which affords you an unmatchable vantage point for a breathtaking panoramic view of the Rupununi Savannahs and neighboring Brazil.

While I cannot say for sure at this point whether Schomburgk’s Peak is the absolute highest point across the entire Kanuku Mountain Range, I can say for sure that it is the highest peak within close proximity of the town of Lethem which is part of the reason it is chosen for this adventure.

The magnificent view from the top of Schomburgk’s peak is the climax of your trip which includes admiring the flora and fauna on the way up, learning a few jungle survival skills, stopping by refreshing streams, and the privilege of visiting the upper, less accessible parts of the Kumu Waterfalls.

At present, there are options for day tours which return the same afternoon to Lethem, and overnight tours which pitch tent on top of Schomburgk’s peak to spend the night in the magnificence of nature.

Climbing Schomburgk’s peak involves several hours of trekking between rests, snack breaks, and lunch breaks before arriving at the top of the peak in the early hours of the afternoon. You have the option of pitching tent and spending the night there or heading back down and returning home. If you choose to leave the same day, the day tour itinerary sees you leaving the peak at around 2:30 PM and arriving back in Lethem at around 5:00 P.M.

At present, Climbing Schomburgk’s Peak is guided by licensed, experienced tour guide, born Rupununian, nature and wildlife enthusiast, Jonathan Joseph, who is also the proprietor of Ariwa Beach Resort.
