All these bikes were seized by police in Lethem, Region 9 and dumped in front of the Lethem Police Station. This is because the rider failed to produce relevant documentation to establish ownership of the bike.

These are very likely stolen bikes. Colloquially, they are referred to as “hot bikes.” The bike stealing “business” is very active between the border region of Guyana and Brazil. Bike thieves steal bikes from Brazil and sell them at a cheap price in the Rupununi. They also steal bikes from Lethem and sell them in Brazil.

It would be great if the police could donate all these bikes to a mechanic to make do with them. Unfortunately, it would be unlawful to do so because it would technically equate to theft. Consequently, the bikes are left here to rot.
